Public response to a message from Purdue (I think) requesting info on topographical maps of Africa: Apologies for netnewsing it - I haven't figured out how to return the mail privately. Also, the information may be of interest to others: 1) Contact the embassies of countries you'd like to find out about. 2) If you're interested in back-country travel or mountaineering, ask whether there are national mountain clubs, wildlife agencies, or naturalist societies. They will have maps. You can also ask whether there is game-hunting. The tour operators who'll let you heroically defeat the ravening dik-dik in hoof-to- cannon combat will have maps. [Laying it on a bit thick, ain't I?] 3) The following references are from a book - CLIMBERS AND HIKERS GUIDE TO THE WORLD'S MOUNTAINS by Michael R. Kelsey (Kelsey Publishing Co., 310 E. 950 South, Springville, Utah 84663, 2nd edition 1984, ISBN 0-9605824-2-8, LCCCN 83-083441). [his misapostrophizations, not mine.] Where his African maps come from: ____________________________________________________________ [n.b. \" means the next vowel is umlauted. If you write the parties mentioned, you may type their names by overstriking a double quote on the letter or placing an 'e' after it. Hence Muenchen is an acceptable spelling of M\"unchen.] Bayrisches Landes[ner?]messungsamt, M\"unchen BRD (Federal Republic of Germany) [Kelsey made a hash of this German title. I think the "ner" shouldn't be there, but I'm not sure.] IGN (Institut Geographique National) [sp??? I can spell, but I don't know if those are the right words. Just guessing here.] Paris, France. K\"ummerly & Frey, Bern, Switzerland - produced an Egyptian Highway map. Perhaps they also produce topos of other areas. Michelin Tire Corp, Paris, France [Apparently they cover Africa, though I don't know whether their maps of non-touristed areas are at sufficiently small scales.] US Army Defence Mapping Agency, Washington DC. (for Kenya) Survey of Kenya, Nairobi, Kenya (For Sudan) Lands and Survey Office, Khartoum, Sudan (for Tanzania) Lands and Survey Office, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania ... my guess is that mail to a Lands and Survey office in any country formerly colonized by the British will get results. Guidebooks he mentions for Africa: (all optimized for mountains - but check them out for where their maps come from...) "Guide Book to Mt. Kenya and Kilimanjaro" Mountain Club of Kenya, Nairobi "Guide to the Ruwenzori" Osmaston & Pasteur, Mountain Club of Uganda and West Col "Guide to Rock Climbs in Uganda" Pasteur and Osmaston "Backpackers Africa" Hilary and George Bradt, Bradt Enterprises, Boston (Overmead, Bucks, UK) "Table Mountain Guide," "Climbs on Table Mountain" Mountain Club of South Africa. "The Drakensberg of Natal" LIebenberg, Mountain Club of South Africa. Hope that helps. Is there an archive somewhere where one can look for old answers to new questions? (Typical wet-behind-the-ears new user question.) Please cc me if you have further information. Thank you. Cheers, Oded Oded Feingold UUCP: mitvax!oaf MIT AI Lab Arpa: oaf%oz@mit-mc.ARPA 545 Tech Sq.
