[comp.windows.x.motif] Motif demo programs on SCO Opendesktop

trevor@trevan.uucp (07/24/90)

SCOs development system does not include the demo programs which are
extensively refered to in the manuals. Can anyone tell me where I can get
these.

This is a problem that we (as a vendor) have run into also. If you
make a binary release of Motif and ship it with your system (paying
$40 to OSF) you cannot also ship the sources to the demo programs
(at least by my reading of the license). But the demo source is the
real "manual" on how to program Motif widgets and the various
books on Motif are based on the sources for these demo programs.

It would be nice of the binary distribution license said you could
ship the Motif binaries plus the sources for the things in the
'sample' directory.

What is DIGITAL shipping with its current MOTIF kit for VAX/VMS?
Hard to beleive that the standard examples would not be included.
The fact that the examples are extensively refered to in the manuals
(and obviously you can ship the manuals) would tend to imply the same
treatment to be given as the manuals.

We are working on springing the demo program sources free of license
restrictions. This should happen very soon.

Given the restrictions noted earlier, DEC can't ship the examples without
charging
for a source license; most people wouldn't like that :-)
Besides, for the VMS user, most of the demos require porting; some can't port at
all.
(Like the Motif shell - unless you're running DECShell on VMS)
