I would like to get some information on several tools and their portability across different machines. My company is moving towards OSF/Motif as its standard Window System. We mostly have (but not restricted to) SUN (4.1) workstations. I would like to know what is out there (either free or for sale) for the following: o debugging tool. I currently have xdbx. Is it good bad, reliable, is there anything better? o mail tool. I have xmail. Is there anything better? o TeX/LaTeX previewer. I have xtex. Is there anything better? o calendar/appointments tool. DEC workstations have a nice tool but then the Sun users have to rsh to a DEC..... o emacs for X. i.e. all the key/mouse buttons bound. I have gnu. Is there anything better? o Is there a lock screen tool (like the one in SunView) ? You can send e-mail. I'd be glad to summarize on the net. Thank you -- Demetrios Yannakopoulos IMSL, Inc. I wouldn't leave home without it. Its a completely new graphical debugger with a built in C interpreter for conditional breakpoints, an expandable view of the current stack trace and lots of other goodies. For more details contact Mark Wheadon <mcw@ukc.ac.uk> or myself. > o mail tool. I have xmail. Is there anything better? If you use "mh" try "xmh". Its available in the standard MIT Distribution (SMD11.4 8-) of X11R4 under mit/clients/xmh. > o TeX/LaTeX previewer. > I have xtex. Is there anything better? "xdvi" which was sent to comp.sources.x and is also on expo.lcs.mit.edu for anon ftp (I think). > o calendar/appointments tool. > DEC workstations have a nice tool but then the > Sun users have to rsh to a DEC..... Try "xcal" posted to comp.sources.x a few months ago. Check in an archive somewhere. > o emacs for X. i.e. all the key/mouse buttons bound. I have > gnu. Is there anything better? I remember something called "epoch", a multi-window emacs??? > o Is there a lock screen tool (like the one in SunView) ? "xlock" posted by Dan Heller to comp.sources.x, again probably in an archive. Probably a general question, so I'll respond here. You should also check the XUG FAQ list just posted to comp.windows.x; it includes a number of useful product-related lists. (Also: xgdb, but it doesn't work particularly well.) |> o mail tool. I have xmail. Is there anything better? dxmail is OK if you have DEC hardware, though it is a strange combination of Motif and Athena code. |> o calendar/appointments tool. |> DEC workstations have a nice tool but then the |> Sun users have to rsh to a DEC..... Try Synchronize from CrossWind Technology (San Jose). |> o emacs for X. i.e. all the key/mouse buttons bound. I have |> gnu. Is there anything better? 18.55 does some mouse/button bindings. Try Epoch (announcement recently in comp.windows.x) |> o Is there a lock screen tool (like the one in SunView) ? xlock was recently was upgraded to R4. on expo. David B.
