Well, there are several ways I know of to get Emacs running on VMS. One way is to run one of the standard Unix Emacs implementations under Eunice. To do this you must purchase Eunice and the Emacs implementation. On the other hand, the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science has implemented Emacs in NIL, a dialect of Maclisp developed here a few years ago. Since the Emacs is written in Lisp, it is very easily extensible. But the nice thing is that both of these are FREE! Contact George Carette for more information. I have used the editor a bit (it's called STEVE (acronym of what, I'm not sure)). It has a slightly different "feel" to it than TECO EMACS, but I suspect customization would "fix" it. Also, subsystems such as INFO and BABYL are not yet implemented. I'd appreciate hearing other opinions of this editor, and the NIL system in general. scott kramer <sjk@ucbvax, ucbvax!sjk>
