I am developing on a Decstation 3100, using a pre-release version of Motif 1.0, Ultrix 3.xx, and X11R3. We want to upgrade to ultrix 4.0 and X11R4, but we can't upgrade to Motif 1.1 just yet. I remember hearing rumors that Motif 1.0 does not work with XR4. Does anybody know whether this is true? -- Matt -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- = Matthew M. > I remember hearing rumors that Motif 1.0 does not work with XR4. Does anybody > know whether this is true? It depends on what you call "upgrade to X11R4". I think you can run an X11R4 server with X11R3 Motif 1.0 as the client side without problem, but no way to upgrade your Xlib or Xt to R4 libraries without releasing 1.1. This is not correct. There has been plenty of anecdotal evidence in this forum to the contrary, which was all collected by OSF at one stage. I am frankly surprised and disappointed to see this mis-statement re-emerge from OSF. We have been running Motif 1.0* with its own R3 Xt, on top of the X11R4 Xlib, talking to R3 servers. No problems have been experienced here over several months of heavy use by 5-6 users. I believe R4 servers would work as well. -- Esmond Pitt, Computer Power Group ejp@bohra.cpg.oz D

Motif release 1.0 absolutely requires its own Intrinsics, an extended version of R3. This ships in full with 1.0 releases. Initially, we weren't recommending using the R4 Xlib, but several people (including us :-) tried it and we have had no problems at all. Go ahead. If you use an R4 server, you will exercise a bug in event mask handling in the paned window. To get around this, either run the server in Bug Compatible mode, or get patched up to 1.0.3. OSF/Motif release 1.1 requires the R4 intrinsics, which are part of the standard distribution, patched right up to date; the patches are on the Motif tape. R4 Xlib is also required. It should run on an R3 server. -- David Brooks dbrooks@osf.org Systems Engineering, OSF uunet!osf.org!dbrooks Experience Hackvergnuegen!

Maybe I should have only mention R3 Xt Intrinsics vs R4 Xt (Motif 1.0 *requires* its own Xt), although I don't think it's really safe to use Xlib R4 as well. > I believe R4 servers would work as well. The server side is not significant here. > I am frankly surprised and disappointed to see this > mis-statement re-emerge from OSF. Ok, the next time I'll push the delete button instead of trying to help this public domain list. I been using the R4 Xlib with Motif 1.0 & the modified R3 Intrinsics with no problems. -- Don Bennett (408)433-3311 dpb@frame.com Frame Technology
