[comp.windows.x.motif] Motif default font - is DEC's usage non-standard?

ngse18@castle.ed.ac.uk (J R Evans) (09/12/90)

We are working with Motif 1.0 on VMS 5.3 and Ultrix/RISC 3.1 using
binaries provided by DEC. Yesterday, I tried to run some binaries on a
VMS client, using a Tektronix XD88 server. The client application
crashed because the server was unable to find any font matching
"-*-MENU-MEDIUM-R-Normal--*-120-*-*-P-*-ISO8859-1". This is no big
problem - fixing it is simply a matter of setting up a font alias - but
I am curious as to how it came about. Both VMS and Ultrix/RISC versions
of XmP.h define XmDefaultFont as the above, whereas the Tektronix
supplied equivalent does not define it at all. (btw, The owners of the
XD88 tell me that they have discovered a number of client applications
which fail similarly on the VMS system.)

Would any guru out there care to comment, please?
