I am running away to St. Thomas in May and would like to know more informaton about the economy (ie. job availabilty, types of jobs, housing, etc.) I have heard that there are boarding house type places. Are these safe for a woman alone, and does anyone have any idea of the cost? Any info on St. Thomas or the Virgin Isles is appreciated. Thanks in advance!! -Karen B.

From what I know of St. Thomas (stayed awhile, and had friends that lived there for over 4 years), here's the scoop: Be VERY careful as a woman alone. I personally had some difficulty with a few men who's great lines ("well, aren't you going to ask me to your room?") didn't just go away when told no. Luckily, I know enough kickboxing to have handled the situation, and the guys. Don't hang around anywhere alone, especially at night. When approached, mention your boyfriend who should be back any minute. Places to stay cheaply are tough. EVERYWHERE is expensive there. Best bet is to check out with the college kids (College of the Virgin Islands), and ask them where they stay. Jobs are available...just hard to come by. Be prepared to be offered secretarial and waitress jobs, regardless of your qualifications. You sort of have to beat people over the head until they understand that women can do more than type or bring drinks. Although I may be painting a gloomy picture, it ain't so bad. St. Thomas is gorgeous. The weather is wonderful, and the beaches are quite nice. St. John is restful, also gorgeous, and there are less problems. Also, less chances to find work....but you have to take the good with the bad. Good luck. Wish I was going too. Mikki Barry
