[comp.windows.x.motif] Disabling accelerators

prc@erbe.se (Robert Claeson) (10/17/90)

Sorry if this is a novice question, but...

How do I disable all mwm accelerators? More specifically, I have a few
clients that need to receive all keypresses without mwm getting in their
way intercepting key combinations like Alt-F5. I've tried just about
everything without any success. While I'm at it, how do I disable, or
change, the accelerators for just one kind of clients (say, xterms
with a special name)?

This is for Motif 1.0.

I've been using mwm on a Sun, the Quest 1.0 version, for a few days. I have several
complaints. There is no man page for mwm (or anything about Motif except the
library functions.) There was no printed "user" documentation with the Quest
package that applies to Motif (mostly mwm.) The OSF book that is a user guide
only mentions a handful (or less) of the resources that mwm can use. So, where
do I find a complete list of mwm resources, and how, as Robert Claeson asked, do
I disable the mwm default accelerators?

Here are my complaints:
Rich Fortson bought Quest Motif 1.0 for his Sun-4/330, so I've been
running mwm (Motif Window Manager) from it for 3 days now. I think I'll
go back to twm soon. I have about 5 complaints. Mwm is too slow. It
has fixed sized icons, so my cm icon has only Sunday and Monday of the
first two weeks of the month, and my world map with daylight and night
shown only shows North and South America. I can't use the meta-space
accelerator in xmh to show the next mail message, because mwm brings up
the frame menu in xmh instead. I have to click to change focus between
windows, and, worse yet, that window is then brought to the front,
obscuring what I wanted to see in another, non-focal, window. And I
don't have all the neat twm features, like warpto and function keys
programmed to iconify, circulate, etc. I suppose I could get some,
maybe all, of those features I need by customization, but there's no
on-line manual! I'll check to see if Rich's printed manual is more
informative.

And, now I've gone back to twm, and my icons are still reduced in size!

I found that Quest puts their (cat form only) mwm man page in share/man/catn/mwm.1X.
