[comp.windows.x.motif] Porting to Motif 1.1

mattf@cac.washington.edu (Matthew Freedman) (12/06/90)

I am about to start porting my application written under Motif 1.0 to
Motif 1.1, and I have two questions.

Does anybody have an opinion on whether I should use a vendor supplied
Motif product, or is it better to get the source direct from OSF and
compile it myself? In particular, the machine is a DecStation 3100, I
could buy DEC's Motif 1.1 developers kit, but the University is in the
process (long and drawn out) of getting a campus-wide motif source
license. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the two
approaches?

The second question is, what is available in terms of Motif 1.1
documentation? I assume that both of the above approaches would give me
on-line man-pages. But what about a comprehensive document explaining
what has been changed in 1.1 (more than a list of new function names)?
Is the Prentice Hall OSF-Motif series available for 1.1 yet? How about
the Young book?

The DecStation (DecWindows) is still (ULTRX 4.1) X11R3 based. Dec has hacked Motif 1.1 to run with its server. If your application is targeted at DecStations, then by all means, use the DEC product. If you build and install X11R4, then you will need to build Motif 1.1 for yourself also.

The Motif distribution comes with a number of postscript files representing the complete documentation set, as well as all of the pieces in troff format. It is quite well done.

How about the VMS version? Has DEC made Motif 1.1 work with the X11R3-based
server there, too? Does anybody know when it'll be released?
