Tell them not to miss San Gemignano [sp???], near Florence. Stay at La
Cisterna Hotel. Cheap and gorgeous, rooms with balconies overlooking
beautiful scenery. The town is terrific for walking around and
discovering things. We happened on a storefront wine bottling operation
on a side street. Three men ran it; one filled the bottles, one corked the
bottles, and one put the labels on. The men were drinking as much as they were
bottling. They invited us in and in pigeon English told us how much they loved
Americans because we had liberated their city from the Nazis. Of course they
gave us plentiful samples of their wine. There was a store across from the
Hotel that sold Deruta (sp???) pottery at very cheap prices. It's beautiful,
colorful stuff. The town itself is beautiful and serenely ancient. This was
about 10 years ago. I hope it hasn't changed much.
