[comp.windows.x.motif] testing motif 1.0 yes! motif 1.0

ajm@seqp4.ORG (A.J.Madison) (04/09/91)

An article in comp.windows.x concerning testing caught my eye and wanted to ask
a similar question here. What kind of testing experiences have various people
had and what, if any, repercussions have their been. Have very many people
tried the: "well it runs, ... ship it." approach with Motif? Considering that
some organizations are likely to defer any problem to the knowledge and
expertise of OSF, it may be a strategy that can work.

Right now, I seem to be seeing a non trivial number of variances from test
results to the documentation, and don't know if this is a result of
a: the portation
b: portation of the test suite
c: inaccurate documentation
d: all of the above
and wonder if other peoples' experiences have been the same.

Also, is Xtm worth pursuing?

And, yes, it is Motif 1.0. If I had the extra arm and the extra pair of eyes,
I would start the X11R4 and Motif 1.1 portation immediately.
many thanks to all respondees.

I have seen companies try this, but in most cases they regret it later. I suggest
that some form of formal testing be done.

In my opinion, if your server(s) don't already support it, no. The VTS that is
used for V1.1.1 (and beyond) validation doesn't require any server extension
and therefore is a throw-away investment. Then again, in my opinion, working on
V1.0 of Motif is a throw-away investment too, so I guess you need to make this
decision.

Well, you will likely find that many of the problems you may find in 1.0 have
been fixed in later versions. Also, your user community would probably prefer
to have the 1.1 version, as there are some coding changes required for
applications from v1.0 to v1.1. With version 1.2 not very far away, I would
think that 1.0 would nearly be obsolete from a developers perspective.
