What to take when travelling abroad? There's an old saying that aptly applies: Take half as many clothes and twice as much money. The following is a list of the maximum amount of stuff one really needs to cart around. We use nylon bags like large athletic bags with a shoulder strap. My wife's bag usually weighs around 12 pounds, mine about 15 (I carry the duffel bag and more books and magazines). Modify the list to fit the destination - parkas aren't necessary in North Africa and shorts are not needed in the Andes. For that matter, shorts are culturally inappropriate in many hot countries. Anyway, this list is based on experiences in almost 40 countries throughout the world. Have fun!
