[net.travel] Question about hostels, American and European

tomf@bunny.UUCP (Tom Fawcett) (05/13/85)

Last weekend I went with a friend to Nantucket Island, off
Massachusetts. We had planned to stay at a hostel (the only one on the
island), but on arriving (at 5) discovered that it had an 8 o'clock
curfew and demanded lights out at 10. The AYH booklet gave no mention
of such times. We were interested in having a leisurely dinner in
town and seeing the night life of Nantucket, so we decided against
staying there and chose a hotel in town instead.

My questions are: Are such times typical? How much do they vary?
I understand that a hostel should be something of a community, but these
curfew hours seem fairly restrictive, especially if one likes a leisurely
dinner and a stroll around town after a day of travelling.

Also, we are planning to tour Europe this summer, and want to stay at hostels
occasionally. Do European hostels have similar curfew hours?

Thanks,
Tom Fawcett
