[comp.windows.x.motif] Motif Developer's Tools

ma8ajb@gdt.bath.ac.uk (A J Bowie) (04/30/91)

I am seeking recommendations for a developer's tool to use with Motif.
I have only just started working with X-windows, but have already had
a false start, since up till now I've been using Open Look on a Sun
Sparcstation. We are now having to switch over to Motif though.

Previously I had been using Sun OpenWindows Developer's Guide (DevGuide),
which allowed easy creation of user interfaces through clicking icons,
and then generating the code itself. A similar kind of package for
Motif is what I'm looking for, preferably creating C++ code. I saw the
post on Interface Architecture from HP, and if anyone else has any
recommendations, I'd very much appreciate them.

You should have a look at X-Designer from Imperial Software
Technology. This is a User Interface builder for Motif which
we have been shipping for almost a year now. There is a
simple, but powerful interface - you click on Motif icons,
building up a widget hierarchy graphically. At the same time,
the interface you are building can be exercised and checked.
When you have the interface you want, you generate C. The C
only requires X and Motif libraries.

I too would like to find out what ``Interface Builder'' tools
(allowing you to graphically assemble your app interface)
are available for Motif/X---if you know of any, please
reply directly to me, and I will summarize the results.
Even better would be a pointer to a review of such tools.

For example, I just saw a new one called JAM, from JYACC, Inc,
advertised in the most recent issue of SunExpert
(the one with brains on the front; the add is in the new products
section).

If you know, hit ``r'' now to reply. Thanks.

The FAQ list just posted to comp.windows.x includes a summary of such tools.
