[net.travel] Buying china in London

doug@terak.UUCP (Doug Pardee) (05/16/85)

If you're going to England in the near future, you might be interested:

While visiting London the first week of last October, my wife and I
ordered a full set of dinner china from the Reject China Shop, which
is probably the largest and most respectable discount china outlet in
England.

We were told that delivery usually took 4-6 weeks, but that they were
running a lot closer to 6 weeks at the time, and that since 6 weeks
from then was right in the Christmas mail rush, it might be more like
8 weeks. So we signed the addendum to the sales contract which read,
"Delivery Delay Accepted".

If you check your calendar, you'll see that it has been over 7 *months*.
After 3 months, we received a partial shipment (approx 15% of the
original order). Since then we've gotten a number of form letters which
give different explanations for the delay, and now they are saying that
the situation should be straightened out within the next 6 months (!!!).

The bill arrived on our MasterCard, and was paid for, back in November.
At a considerably worse exchange rate than now. We have lost all
patience, but know of nothing we can do.

The UK Post Office Workers were on strike some time in April. I don't know
when the strike began, but it is now settled.

Should your china not arrive soon, I suggest you write a polite threatening
letter to RCS, explaining that you will send a copy to the travel editor of
every major U.S. newspaper. Should this fail to produce results, there are
consumer protection organizations that you can complain to.
I think there is a U.K. government organization called something like
"The Office of Fair Trading." What you need is a copy of the London Phone book.
Your library might have it.
There used to be (5 years ago) a weekly BBC(ITV?) program solely devoted
to long winded consumer horror stories that was very humorous (and effective
in getting action). Esther Rantzen was the host.

The Organization does exist and, that is the correct title of the Office.
