I would like to use C++ with Motif. However, I have to convince my management that C++ is 'real', i.e., supported enough that portability and future platform support will be managable. To support my argument, I would like to know who else is trying (and hopefully succeeding) at what I am beginning. I have to use Motif, and it seems to me that C++ (in conjunction with the UIMX builder tool) is a good way to go. What I would like to know is: (a) What sort of applications (and companies) are developing with C++ and Motif? What products are completed? (i.e., delivered to customers, not research toys). (b) What problems were encountered, particularly around platform portability and support? Are those problems still present? (c) Is ATT C++ V2.0 stable enough to be useful on a range of platforms (Sun, Dec, IBM, HP)? I don't think I can justify G++ due to the support problems on different platforms and some bad experience with Gnu Emacs. (d) How different is the ANSI C++ going to be from ATT V2.0? This is a long term support problem. (e) What (if any) C++ binding for the Motif and Xt widgets are people using, and with what sort of sucesses or problems? Is the Univ of Lowell bindings the only set available? So if you are using C++ with Motif, please reply to me directly (stanley@icad.com) If I get enough replies, I will post the results. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Stanley Knutson ICAD, 201 Broadway, Cambridge MA 02139 Stanley@icad.com Knowledge-Based Mechanical Engineering (617) 868-2800 -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Stanley Knutson ICAD, 201 Broadway, Cambridge MA 02139 Stanley@icad.com Knowledge-Based Mechanical Engineering (617) 868-2800 "Object-oriented mechanical design"
