Just unmanage the child (or create it and don't manage it until you
need it).

I'm not sure which upsets me more: that people are so unwilling to accept
responsibility for their own actions, or that they are so eager to regulate
everyone else's.

I've seen this done with Athena Widgets. Is it possible with Motif (1.1).
