SUGtape '91 - Request for code, help, etc. The SUG Tape Committee collects and repackages materials of specific interest to the Sun community. The 1989 archive, for instance, is monumental (~130 MB) and comprehensive (1985-1989). (See SUN-SPOTS v9n3 for specifics.) We are now collecting material for a new SUGtape (and possible CDROM), as: * New versions of packages published on the 1989 tape (HyperNeWS, Icon V8, INGRES '89, ...) * New packages, not published on the 1989 tape (CE, ikp, ISIS, POSTGRES, ...) If you know of a package that should be included, please let us know. We are doing our own search on the Internet, but we could easily miss something tasty. We are also looking for institutions and individuals who would like to help with a new venture: binary SUGtapes. We intend to publish binary versions of several large (e.g., FRANZ, GNU, INGRES, MH, TeX, X11R4, ...) packages. The idea is to give sites and users a jump start on installing these systems. The binary tapes will include any configuration files, easing modification and recapitulation of the binary versions. The current targets are Sun-[34]'s running SunOS 4.1. Other targets may be added later if demand warrants. The selection criteria are: ! Binary size is within reason. ! Binary distribution is permitted. ! Environment independence is possible. ! Ported versions for Suns are available. + Package is usable by non-programmers. + Configuration/installation are resource intensive. + Configuration/installation are complicated/lengthy. We are looking for: * testing sites * ported versions * suggested packages Let us know if you would like to help with this effort. Helpful comments and suggestions are also requested (flames > /dev/null). Contact the SUG Tape committee at: SUG Tape Committee (415) 873-7841 voice/fax Canta Forda Computer Lab.
