[net.travel] Adirondacks backpacking hints?

cws@aluxz.UUCP (SPIVAK) (07/30/85)

We are planning a backpacking trip in the Adirondacks in
August, and would welcome tips on Your Favorite Place to go,
places to avoid, and so on. We are the type of
backpackers who, while not severely wimpy, do tend to get passed by
Cub Scouts a lot. We'll be out for about a week.

Also: we are (gulp) taking our dog: has anyone had any experience
doing this?
Thanks in advance!

"I knew camping wasn't for me, but the hike proved it..."

Two suggestions:

Not a backpacking spot, but a good out-of-the-way car camping state park
(might be nice as a starting point depending on where you're headed)
is Eighth lake. It's in the Fulton chain of lakes, on a peninsula between 7th
and 8th lakes, and far enough up to get rid of most of the RV-ers. The
nearest town is Inlet - also a gas, everything is owned by the same family,
and there's a great bookstore. The Fulton chain of lakes is an excellent
canoe trip for those of you into that -- few portages, spectacular scenery,
and well-spaced state parks for water, campsites, etc.

For backpacking, the area around Mt. Marcy is also nice -- I don't remember
specific trailheads though.

have fun.
