[net.travel] Yellowstone anyone?

brian@ut-sally.UUCP (Brian H. Powell) (07/06/85)

Not long ago I posted a query about Yellowstone National Park.
Apparently no one has ever been to Yellowstone. No replies.
Let's try again, maybe one of you has a third cousin that flew over
it in a plane once twenty years ago.

What are the things to see/miss? We'll be spending five days. What
should we take that we won't think of until we get there? Any suggestions
for climate? (We're from Texas; "What do ya mean 'cold at night'. Shoot,
it gets down to 65 here in Austin at night. That's pretty cold.")

The most helpful responses would be about what to do while there, but
any comments would be most appreciated.

I sent this out a while back and it seems not to have made it, so I will
post my reply.

OK, OK I'll talk. We lived in Billings, MT for several years and went
to Yellowstone many times, although tried to avoid it during "the tourist
season" (summer). Yellowstone gets 3 million visitors a year (90% during
the summer).

What to do? Well, other than driving around and looking at the
geysers, etc. Yellowstone is not that scenic (though not ugly, either).
You can hike there, and there are lots of lakes. If you are interested
in geology, the exhibits at "Quake Lake" (Hebgen Lake) are quite good, and
describe an earthquake formed lake "made" in the 50's -
a few miles west of the park. Lake Yellowstone is quite beautiful, although
big for small boats (there are plenty of smaller lakes for that).

I would recommend seeing the Tetons (I'm assuming you are driving in from the
south). Also, don't (DON'T) miss the chance to drive the Beartooth Highway
(as the locals call it), which goes from Cooke City, WY to Red Lodge, MT.
According to reporter Charles Curault (and ME) it the most spetacular road
in the US. A must.

Weather? Could get up to 90, down to upper 30's. Probably expect a low of
48, high of 84. Could get some thunderstorms, but probably sunny.

I know this doesn't help much, but the best time to see Yellowstone is
by snow cat in the winter. You take the "cat" from Gardner, MT to
the Old Faithful Lodge. You can stay at the lodge. The "cat" is run like
a bus service (quite reasonable as I recall).

Have fun,

You can also get to the Old Faithful Lodge in the winter by snow cat or rented
snowmobile from the South Entrance near Jackson, WY. Try combining it with a
ski trip to Jackson Hole (GREAT). Reserve the lodge and cat/snowmobile well in
advance.
