During our recent vacation in the Adirondack mountains of New York, my wife and I spent a day at The Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, NY. It describes itself as "a regional museum of history and art." The museum comprises about a dozen buildings housing displays of the region's history - geological, natural, economic, and cultural - and fine art. Especially interesting were the exhibits of transportation from horse-drawn wagons and sleighs to a magnificent private rail car, the Oriental, to the Adirondack guideboat, a cousin of the canoe. There's also a nice bookshop. I heartily recommend the museum to Adirondack visitors... especially on rainy days. The address is The Adirondack Museum, Blue Mt. Lake, NY 12812. Admission for adults was $5.50 - well worth it. The museum is open June 15 through October 15 every day from 10 am to 6 pm. Steve Campbell Dartmouth College
