[comp.sys.amiga.games] Midwinter by Rainbird

I tried to play this game and gave up.

First, if you hate difficult copy protection schemes, this thing will
give you a heart attack. Not only is the disk not copyable, it's not even
a recognizable DOS disk. So forget about installing it on your hard disk.
As far as I can tell the ONLY way to play is to boot from their disk.

They also add manual-based protection on top of that. Now, I think that for
games "look up the word" protection is fine. But this is the most inconvenient
form I have ever seen. You are shown pictures of two characters and you are
supposed to click on the correct name of each one, to be found in the manual.
But the character descriptions, with pictures, are spread out through the
entire manual which is probably about 100 pages! Let me tell you... this
was a damned nuisance; and since many of the pictures look very similar
it took me three times, thumbing through the manual, before I got it right.

The game itself? When I finally got it started, it was not obvious how to
begin it, and I couldn't quickly find instructions in the manual (lots
of "interesting background" type stuff". My patience was exhausted, so
I turned off the machine.

I was at the local Amiga store previewing the program. Needless to say,
I didn't buy it. After the complaints I've heard about Rainbird software
in the past, I would have hoped they would have become a little friendlier.
Instead they've gotten worse.
