A Japanese friend of mine in graduate school told me that bringing suit in Japan is the height of bad manners. Everyone is embarassed by the spectacle, so it is considered more appropriate to submit the dispute to a respected authority figure for informal (but binding) ajudication. Given this, it is hard for me to comprehend exactly what those 3 lawyers per 10000 employees actually do -- maybe they decipher the inscrutable occidental legal codes. Also, I know of nothing in the Japanese social structure that places a stigma on accounting, so the low proportion of accountants is perplexing. I guess that when you're raking in the dough by making quality products at a reasonable price, losing track of a few bucks (or yen) here and there is not big deal.
