I am looking at purchasing a 3000. How many games (popular) will run (or won't run) on the 3000? Doug D.

The reason is that the games are BAD programmed. They use software-loops like: loop: dbra d0,loop and this loop will NOT cause the same time delay on a computer with 68030 prosessor as on an "normal" 68000. Some programs do also jump directly into ROM and when a new ROM appears like V2.0 the adress has changed, so the program jumps out in space... I have tested all my own games on a 68030 (A2630) since I am a "flight simulator" I hoped they would run faster. I have also seen some programs tested on a 68030 and this is the conclusion: Interceptor - Works ...extremely fast graphics...good programming F16 Falcon - Works (sometimes) seems buggy...sometimes my joystick will not work forwards FIGHTER BOMBER - Does NOT work ..if you trie, you jumps into the programmers own debugger...displaying all registers. Flight Simulator II- Works(This one is too old...) GUNSHIP - Works(but where are the Amiga graphicss...) Red Storm Rising- Works(also with harddisk&FFS) Retailiator - Crashes I have heard that DOS-2-DOS not works on an 68030. These are all the games I have so I cant't say more about games, but I think that in general most games are BAD programmed. I can NOT understand why developers of simulators do not test their programs on a faster prosessor. That is what I call beeing lazy.! Olav Gimmestad

Many games do run, many do not. Here is a list of a few that DO NOT run on the 3000 Double Dragon Archon II Archon drakkhen Arctic Fox Dragons Lair I Ones that DO run Heart of the Dragon (under 1.3 or 2.0 and is HD installable) Renegade (under 1.3) Obliterator Xenon (seems to under 1.3) Champions of Krynn ^^^^ is HD Installable BAAL Fire Power Battle Chess AARGH! Galactic Invasion Sword of Sodan FA/18 Flight Sim Most of the above were tested under 1.3 only. In addition Populous does not run, even with the 030 patch, it boots OK but you cannot play, you die instantly every time you actually start a game. Shadow of the Beast I & II DO NOT run, II lets you start, but crashes shortly thereafter. More than 1/2 the games seem to run, but maybe not much more than 1/2, and many under 1.3 only -Roger UUCP: {hplabs!hp-sdd ucsd nosc}!crash!pnet01!uzun ARPA: crash!pnet01!uzun@nosc.mil INET: uzun@pnet01.cts.com

I have Project D, which can backup Populous and does some kind of copy protection removal at the same time. I tried this copy on my 3000 (I think under 1.3), and it worked fine. I think it was running hyperfast, but it was still playable, and I hadn't played lately on my 2000, so I can't compare really. But I definitely didn't die instantly when I started a game. I did have trouble clicking on the "start game" button fast enough, as it liked to go into demo mode very quickly. In other words, once you make a backup with Project D, the only problems are that the idiots used timing loops. -- ============================================================================== Nancy Durgin | (Usual disclaimers | Tegra-Varityper, Inc. tegra!nad@uunet.com | apply...) | Billerica, Massachusetts ==============================================================================

It was supplied by an external contractor and does lots of really horrible things (with stack frames, self-modifying code etc) that mean it won't run on anything but a 68000.
