Amen! VI just blows EMACS so far out of the water it's only a few years
from frying upon re-entry.

Emacs just... well, sux.

I like MEmacs for Amiga (Especially the 2.0 version) but I agree that
GNU-Macs sucks a big one.

While the above is true about the current version of GNU-emacs on the
amiga, I would suggest that anyone tries running gnu-emacs under a
real unix computer with 16+ MByte of memory. You will find out that
gnu-emacs is an extremly powerful and versatile editor. Emacs comes
with 5-10 MBytes of script-files (in an lisp interpreted by emacs).
These files are so powerful that they for most purpose almost obviate
the need ever to enter the shell (not that I mind). Claiming that
gnu-emacs is inferior to the lowly vi, is quite funny as there are
not one , but two complete vi-emulations in script-files. So you
can use emacs in vi-mode even while at the same time in other buffers
and windows using the original emacs and having the advantage
of all the emacs power. Only one last example: I am posting this from
'gnus' one of several nntp-based news readers (yes, they are nothing
but script files in emacs lisp). 'gnus' is by far nicer than any
other character/curses based new reader I have ever seen.

So, please, before writing about something you don't have the foggiest
idea about, PLEASE get informed.
(I am convinced that at least some of the posters were actually
talking about micro-emacs, never having seen anything else.).

I have even heard about a version of Space Invaders and Centipede
written completely in EMACS LISP. Do THAT on VI...

(BTW, anybody played these or others? I'd appreciate knowing where I
can FTP some EMACS hacks from...)

Carl, please remember that choice of text editors is usually a very
personal issue, and some folks just like different things than you
do.

I am convinced that there is no "best editor", just the "editor I like
the most". Different folks like different editors for lots of
different reasons.

Don't assume that since someone has a different opinion of EMACS than
you that they haven't tried it. It sounds to me that the two previous
posters have tried EMACS, and one doesn't like it at all, and the other
likes the Amiga version, but not the GNU version. They were informed.
I happen to agree with the first poster. I don't like EMACS, but
that's my opinion.

Can we take this to comp.editors?

Now back to the games:

Has anyone heard if the new version of Silent Service is going to be
coming out for the Amiga? I saw version II is out for the IBM PC's
but the guy at the store didn't know anything about it for the Amiga.
From the description on the box, it should be great! They've upgraded
the graphics and sound, and added a "campaign" mode where you can go
out multiple times with the same commander and get promoted, etc.
That's just what I can remember having read.

I'll certainly buy it if it comes out.

Geez, guys, that's swell. But to paraphrase our beloved Doctor Leonard
"Bones" McCoy, I want an editor, not an operating system. If I want to ru
Lisp programs, about the last place I'll look for that capability is
my text editor. If I want to play arcade games, I'll boot up an arcade
game.

In any case, while I personally love vi, I have only used micro-Emacs
and so can't comment on the full-blown Emacs. I wouldn't for a moment
suggest that someone who is happy with emacs is really miserable for not
using vi. And I suggest that those who wish to continue vi-emacs wars
take them someplace where they're welcome - assuming you can find one.

How do you get the cursor keys to work with a full-blown UNIX emacs
if I'm using a vt100 emulator? Our emacs doesn't seem to have any docs
and I'm sick of typing F,B,N,P.
