I have recently been playing a game called Millenium 2.2 but have lost
the instructions (it's a friends copy.) I'm hoping that somebody out
there know's how to play and can give ma some hints, eg how do i
find some copper to build colonizing vessels?

This game gets to be really hypnotic after a while. I started playing it one day at 9:30 am and didn't finish until 10:30 PM that night. I completely lost track of the time. The endgame was a tremendous letdown.

You need to send some Grazers out to the asteroid belt to obtain minerals that aren't found on the moon. Just send them out there and wait.
