[net.travel] question on package tour to Cancun, Mexico

gill@wanginst.UUCP (Timothy D. Gill) (01/16/86)

A friend and I are considering taking a 1 week package trip to Cancun, from
Boston, to have some sun before we start new jobs. One agency has trips from
$350 to $950, based on the hotel used. The cheaper hotels are in town and
the beach ones start at nearly $600. I overheard someone in a store say that
with the recent additional devaluation of the peso, the only significant cost
was flying there and that one could get a very pleasant room on the beach for
$10 a night, if one arranged it in Mexico on arrival.

Does anyone have experience with this? Saving a couple hundred dollars
is attractive, but the unkowns are high.

We recently made a trip to Cancun, and yes, the unknowns in Mexico
are high. Our trip was arranged thru an agent, and for $750 each
we had our plane fare, taxes, and 7 nights at the Hyatt, with a
private beach, pool, and an ocean front view.

You will find though, that the majority of hotels in Cancun are
"touristy". This is, they have hundreds of occupants (not very
much privacy), and are closer to town. That is, their beach fronts
are more like a fresh water lake, with no surf, extremely crowded,
and probably not worth the "deal" if you're going for the beach as
well as the sun. If you want a good beach, be choosy and aware of
deals. If you don't care about the beach, and just want somewhere
touristy and cheap, go to Florida.
