I would, personally, find a package tour to Cancun most unacceptable.
Once you are there, you will most certainly want to go to Isla Mujeres,
an island off the coast of Cancun, served by inexpensive ferry from Cancun.
This island has quintessential Carribean beaches, and a coral reef.
You won't need hotel accomodations, as inexpensive Mexican hotels are
available there. Excellent restaurants at bargain prices are also available.
This will contrast Cancun, where the "nice" hotels on the beach, are
American transplants with middle class tourists isolated from the
culture which surrounds their sunny retreat.
Also, you might find it is cheaper to fly in to a city other than Cancun,
but nearby, such as Merida, and then travel by bus around the Yucatan,
taking in Mayan and Aztec ruins as well as the sun.
