[comp.sys.amiga.games] Nethack ect. Help wanted.

yorkw@stable.ecn.purdue.edu (Willis F York) (10/27/90)

Well I've been downloading and playing these PD "Rogue" type games.
and wonder what other ones are ut there.
and a fwe question.

Net Hack 3.0 -
This version uses a Custome Font, but it dosen't seem to do anything.
Does the font give ya little men and monsters? OR Just walls and such.
I loaded the font into FED and it looked just like a regular font.

How do i get my little dog to follow me downstairs, I don't want him to get
lost. (He's followed me ONCE)

All in all the BEST "Hack/Slash" i've seen.

Moria - Is this the Worst one out there or what?
When ya have to haggle over a 2 gp biscut it's silly.

Also there seems to be 2 versions out, 1 with Graphics and 1 with "ascii"
what's the Difference? Ie. is one Newer/faster ect...

The game be a lot better if it wasen't soo deadly.
and ya diden't have to rerun the prog when ya die.

omega - ICKKKKKKKY, graphics are all "white" and tiny, and DEADLY i've
gotten out of the city once. and The Inventory idea is inovative
        and lame.

Has anyone gotten ANYWHERE on this one?

------------
What other games along these games are out there?
I know LARN is out there, but i can't find it.
(It was the best Graphic wise of any of them)

Well Just wanting some good cheap Fun.

Try feeding him. Or carry some tripe rations. Dogs really like tripe.

I *actually won* this game. I used a cheat character (all 18's.) It
wasn't worth the effort. Things get really wierd, and you end up going through
a void and get to see a flashing omega, than the game sort of dies.

Willis F York inquires about PD "Rogue" type games:

if it's nethack3.0pl9 then the font is only for the walls & doors.
the game doesn't really need fonts - you don't play it for the graphics.

>How do i get my little dog to follow me downstairs, I don't want him to get
>lost. (He's followed me ONCE)

to get your dog (or feline) to follow you downstairs just make sure that
your pet is standing in a square next to you when you go down. it'll
follow you then ( unless it doesn't like you of course)

>All in all the BEST "Hack/Slash" i've seen.

agreed. see rec.games.hack for much more info on this incredibly hoopy
game

this ones not too bad. i think the version with ascii is a later version
with far less bugs. check out the version number on both versions and play the
latest.

>The game be a lot better if it wasen't soo deadly.

you have to take it slow with this game. buy some stuff, go down a level,
hunt around, go back up, buy some stuff, go down a few levels etc...
good fun but not as good as nethack

>and ya diden't have to rerun the prog when ya die.
yeah

>omega - ICKKKKKKKY, graphics are all "white" and tiny, and DEADLY i've
> gotten out of the city once. and The Inventory idea is inovative
> and lame.

omega is actually a very good game - you have a choice of what your character
can become, your alignment is calculated by how you interact with other
characters. also you have a series of quests to complete. these quests
are different for each character class ie.
if you are a paladin you must eventually kill the High Sorcerer and get
the Star Gem back to the Law Giver (Law Bringer?), but if you are a sorcerer
(who must be chaotic) you must eventually kill the Law Giver and give the
Law Givers Crown to the High Sorcerer.
the inventory is a good idea but takes awhile to get used to.
there are a large number of dungeons above and below ground to explore
good fun game (very humourous in places) - you don't play it for the
graphics.
better that Moria but not as good as Nethack

>Has anyone gotten ANYWHERE on this one?
yeah - i've finished it as Paladin/Magic User/Cleric of Odin (43rd level i
think)

>I know LARN is out there, but i can't find it.
>(It was the best Graphic wise of any of them)
yeah larn is a goody. a bit easy tho' - you play it for score rather than
to get through it. check the fish disks for this one.

play long, play hard

The newest version I know of is called Moria 3.0, and it's the one
with color graphics and such. Very nice, although just when it starts getting
real good, you kill the Balrog and win. :-(

I've finished omega, as an overall winner. I really liked this one,
although the inventory stuff can be cumbersome. As a suggestion, find the
oracle (inside Rampart) and follow her suggestions, you'll find it's a bit
easier this way.

:Well Just wanting some good cheap Fun.

Larn, Hack and HackLite are all available from The Software Distillery.
There have been a number of versions of almost all these games, but you should
be able to find fairly current versions on each pretty easily. All The Software
Distillery games have the nice color fonts, as does Moria. NetHack and Omega
use custom fonts, but no color.

Sorry, you're wrong. The font DOES use color (make sure you have the
current version: NetHack 3.0, patchlevel 9). No special graphics though,
unless you think walls are special :-)

I stand corrected (from several directions, actually!) NetHack for
the Amiga *does* use color... Just not the multicolor fonts I was thinking
of. By the way, if you load the font in via the 'font' preferences module
in 2.0, even just enough to look at it, NetHack will work under 2.0 with
the proper font. This is a big improvement over trying to use it with the
custom font replaced by topaz. :-) I have a script file that I use to
initialize NetHack stuff from a pull down menu on Workbench, and it loads
the font module at the same time as it does the assigns...
