[net.travel] How good is this Hawaiian vacation package?

interran@Shasta.ARPA (01/23/86)

Some of us in a graduate student dorm are planning to buy a
Hawaiian vacation package for spring break. The one we're going
to buy is offered by Travel Hawaii, a division of Travel America.

The package is just the hotel and air transportation (there may
be a free 1st day car rental but I heard these might not be
available). It costs $360 now (it used to be $299, but went up)
for 7 days and 6 nights at Waikiki Surf Hotel with air transportation
on Air Hawaii from SFO to Honolulu and back.

How nice is the hotel and beach? Will we really get our money's
worth? Any first-hand experiences would be appreciated a lot. I read
net.travel regularly, but mail to me and I'll summarize to the net
so the rest don't have to see more than one followup message.

Honolulu is a very large, congested city. Waikiki is a tacky
tourist area, and the beach is lined with hotels.
There is a bus which can take you to other places on Oahu, but
the island is pretty much overrun, and you'll want to get to any
of the other islands just as fast as you can.
Sorry about following up instead of replying directly, but
something is broken in the mail system. I spent a week in
Oahu and Maui, and will give you details if you'd like.
I work better as LSMITH@UT-r20.
