[comp.sys.amiga.games] Corporation or Captive

spierce@pnet01.cts.com (Stuart Pierce) (11/22/90)

It's getting near payday again, and I need a new game to play. Corporation
and Captive both look pretty interesting. Anyone have any comments as to
which is better?
I loved Dungeon Master (my favorite game), but I thought Xenomorph was only
ok.

CADAVER is the best role plaing adventure game I played recently. My favorite
one with Dunjeon Master.

I too loved Dungeon Master (and Chaos Strikes Back - I played on an Atari ST).
I'm deep into Captive and so far as I've seen, it comes closest to the DM
style of game. The only things missing so far are the puzzles and riddles
needed to get through sections of DM, but I'm only finished the 5th level. It
certainly has the atmosphere and ease of play. Lots of levers to pull, doors
to open, etc. You also have to decide how to distribute your experience
points. If I were to rate the DM style games I've played, it would be:

DungeonMaster 10 (still)
Chaos Strikes Back 9 (more dungeon, fewer riddles)
Captive (so far) 9
Bloodwych 8 (not bad, but the sreen's too small)
Xenomorph 7 (mainly mapping, hard to use interface)

I also tried BSS Jane Seymour, which seemed like a good idea. Unfortunately,
I could never get a copy that allowed me to continue past the first level.
I haven't seen Corporation, other than ads, but it too looks interesting.

Other games out now like The Immortal and Cadaver are not really
DungeonMaster style games. I tried both in the store, but I'm not a fan
of joystick interfaces, although the graphics in both are great.

If you like DM, you'll probably like Captive. Captive has the
same type of interface as DM. The dungeon graphics and monsters are
mechanically similar to DM in that you walk through a 3d dungeon with
animated monsters. If you throw a ball, you see it fly out (and
possibly bounce back). Even the doors have similar effects on
monsters as DM doors. The interface is actually a little better than
DM's. You can see all of the characters stats and belongings at once,
although you still have the option of just looking at one character at
a time. Character development is done by spreading experience points
between attributes. You can improve each robot by buying new parts.
Damage is recorded for each part of the robot, such as arms, legs,
hands, head, chest, etc.

In terms of game play, Captive is a cross between DM,
BattleMech, and Starflight. I think it is easier than DM, but that
might be because I have a lot of DM experience. There don't seem to
be any puzzles like those in DM, but I'm only on the 3rd base so I
don't know what else to expect. The only problem I have with the game
is that it was tricky getting started. If you do what the manual
says, you'll end up in a 3x1 hall with no apparent way out. It took
me hours to figure out how to get out of that hall and into the first
"dungeon."

You can save up to nine games on one disk, but you can only
restore when you are in your spaceship. The game works fine on my
2500/20, but I don't think it is HD installable.

I would not describe Cadaver as a role paying game. As far as I can remeber
and please correct me if I am confused, Cadaver is a bit like the old
Alien 8 Spectrum games - and is far more arcade oriented then Dungeon Master
type games.

All the reviews I have read in this country seem to put corporation slightly
over captive but I don't think you will go far wrong with either of them.

Oh, lord, get Corporation, if only to help me gain experience in the game...
No, actually, I bought Corporation a week ago, and it's easily the BEST game
I've ever played.. Even better that The Killing Game Show (which is still an
excellent game, just in a different genre), in fact.

Seriously, though, the gameplay in Corporation is excellent, as are the
graphics (_fast_ first-person, smooth-scrolling inside-a-building-view),
controls (altho I must admit that it takes a few minutes to get used to the
walkaround controller, it is easily the most intuitive method for controlling
a player in a game that I've ever seen), sounds, etc...

I don't know what Captive is like, unfortunately, but (now, you've gotta look
me right in the eyes here) Corporation is INCREDIBLE. Unless you get a more
emphatic response for Captive, go the Corporation way. I'm speechless.

Btw, if you DO get Corporation, let me know. I'm more than willing to share
hints for the game...

Heh. DM pales in the light of Corporation. Think: DM raised to the fifth
power. That good. And, yes, I liked DM a lot also. Think about it.

CADAVER has arcade quality but is definately not arcade oriented. Even people
who don't know how to use a joystick can play this game. This game is an
adventure/role playing game with arcade quality animation, but if you want to
pass levels, you've got to read hundreds of parchmins, collect objects, learn
spells, study potions, use objects in a right way...
I repeat, CADAVER IS A MUST. I love it as much as Dunjeon Master.

By the way, I'm stuck in level 2. Help me please !!!
