[comp.sys.amiga.games] Star Trek III Hints Wanted

schur@isi.edu (Sean Schur) (12/09/90)

I am getting kind of frustrated with Star Trek III. I wonder if someone
could give me some pointers.

First of all, I have a really hard time getting any missions completed.
Whenever I go into warp I seem to be stopped within seconds by either
another Federation ship, enemy ships or an Asteroid belt. Once I get
past the obstacle there is another one right away. This is really
frustrating becauase I keep getting stopped, then I get the messages to
complete my mission or else, then I'm relieved of command. Any suggestions?

The enemy ships I can pretty much handle. Put up your shields, set your target,
and keep firing and reseting the target. The target setting is, in my opinion,
the biggest problem with the game. Click on set, go up to the window on click
on the place to put it, then go back down and start to fire. The enemy ships
can fire on you 4 or 5 times in the time it takes to reset the target. This
gets very tedious. It's also difficult becuase if the cursor goes anywhere
near the edge of the screen you lose your target and you have to go down and
click set again. It might be nice to be able to move the target around with
direction arrows like the ones already there for manuevering the ship. Also,
don't you think a ship as advanced as the Enterprise would have some kind of
automatic target allocation?

This leads me to my second problem. The asteroid belts are a pain in the butt.
It is REALLY difficult to allocate the asteroids as targets fast enough to
fire on them with the current system (see above). There are usually two or
more on the screen at once and it's really fast. Also, they seem to go on
and on, sometimes I'm stuck in an asteroid belt for 5 to 10 minutes. This
gets VERY tedious. Is there another way to avoid them or get away from them
then to just keep setting your target and firing?

On a fairly regular basis it seems I get caught in a magnetic storm while
I'm at a planet, that I need something from. I can fly away and come back
but it usually is still there. Is there another way to get rid of or away
from magnetic storms then to wait them out?

How does the coordinates system work? Sometimes I get missions to go help
a ship at such and such coordinates. However the star map with the
navigator has a different coordinate system that doesn't include the
numbers that Star Fleet has given me. What is the translation of the
coordinates that I given to the ones on my own map?

Is there anything wrong with beaming up things from a planet other then the
ones you need? For instance, if I'm told to go to a planet to pick up tools
and they have Dilithium Crystals also, can I just beam them up too? Will
I get in trouble later? Along the same lines, if I have Dilithium Crystals
in my hold is there a way to use them when I'm low on energy? And when
another Federation ship asks for energy do I have to actually beam something
like Dilithium Crystals over to them, or if I just send them a message
saying that they can have it is it done automatically for me?

Thanks for any and all help. I like the game. I'm just a little frustrated
right now.
