[net.followup] NET ABUSE by pur-ee!CSvax:abw

braddy@houxl.UUCP (08/09/83)

 ...teletone!reo's reprimand of pur-ee!CSvax:abw is
entirely too mild and should definitily include
lurid and profane descriptions of the offender's ancestors.

Because there are new users constantly arriving on the net, it is
more or less inevitable that mistakes will be made. This does not
mean that the people making the mistakes are either malicious or
especially ignorant; they just don't know how to use the net yet.
It is entirely appropriate to mail the poster an explanation of what
he did wrong because in all probability he doesn't know. Launching
a personal attack on the poster is not necessary, and is likely to
be less effective than a simle explanation because it is likely to
provoke resentment in the person who receives it.

Geee I'm just back from vacation and I find myself almost (*ALMOST*)
wishing I'd seen this article. I haven't seen so much activity since
early in the spring when someone's mailer (or user) was sending dozens of
copies of some silly note. WHAT are we going to do about other people's
net manners (ours of course are impeccable!)? I think almost all our problems
are related to people not knowing any better so how about this:
We create a new kind of message that never gets deleted and we post an
article on net manners & protocols to it. Then when someone first says
readnews they will get it printed, and when a new site comes on, the first
site it calls will send it the manners letter. Perhaps the easiest way
would be a group called net.manners that only administrators can post to
and that you can't unsubscribe and that doesn't get aged.
