[comp.sys.amiga.games] PowerMonger criticism

daq@hpfcso.HP.COM (Doug Quarnstrom) (01/05/91)

I have powermonger, and while I like the game, I do not think it
is a 'great' game. There seem to be more complications than
you even need. For example, has anyone ever won with a butter
strategy over a guns strategy? I would like to know if you
can really do it, because if you cannot, there is a flaw in
the realization of a game that seems to have had admirable
goals.

I am not saying that it cannot be done, but it seems from
reading other people's posts that most of the worlds are
won by holding onto a village long enough to invent good
weapons while running away at the right moment to avoid getting
pounded by anyone that is hostile.

Please give me some comments, because I suspect I am missing some
of the beauty of the game. They imply in the rules that they
love the game because it lets people play any way they want to,
but it seems that if you are on a continent with the blue guys,
you had better play in a VERY specific way or you are not going
to survive. Can you ally and trade your way to victory over the
blue guys? I bet you can't, but I could very well be wrong.
Do you win by generating so much wealth that it tips the balance in
your direction? I guess I am not completely sure how one even
goes about trying for an economic victory.

Any inputs would be appreciated.
