[comp.sys.amiga.games] The great RPG-statistics-Survey!!

mnfriedr@faui09.informatik.uni-erlangen.de (Martin Friedrich) (01/10/91)

Hello RolePlayers!

Here it is. Your long awaited survey about the best Computer-Role-Playing-
Games. It is late, yes, but I had no possibility to login during Xmas.
So here it is - complete! I hope you'll enjoy it!
So why do I tell you long stories, just post the outcome:

For all those whou don't know what this was about; I started a poll about
which RPGs are the best, which are loved most, etc.
I listed some of the major RPGs and you had to fill out a questionaire.
You had to sate whether you played the game, if you solved it, and your
overall opinion and what you think about its difficulty.

Here are some common outcomes about the people. There were 52 people
who mailed me their filled out tables. There were 36 Males and 2 Females,
I wasn't able to find out the others, not every mailer includes a real name.
I had 37 answers from the United States, 5 from Australia, only 4 from
Germany and 1 from each United Kingdom, Japan, Sweden, Canada, Finland and
the Netherlands.

I know my list wasn't complete, that's not possible to know ALL of the
RolePlayingGames. So I asked you to add some games you can think of.
The most wanted are here (including how often they were wanted).

1) Wizardry I 10
2) Might & Magic	7
   Might & Magic II	7
4) Wizardry IV 6
5) Wizardry II 5
   Wizardry III 5
   Wizardry V 5
8) Drakkhen 3
   Fairy Tale Adventure 3
   Knights of Legend	3
   Magic Candle 3
   Bloodwych 3
13)Moria 3.0 2
And each of the following games has one vote: Hillsfar, Kult, Wizard's Crown,
Eternal Dagger, Wasteland 2, Space: 1889, BattleTech: Crescent Hawk, Prophecy I,
Autoduel, Starflight, Nethack, Hack, Larn 12.0b, Tunnels & Trolls, Bloodwych
data.

Legend of Fairghail is excluded from the survey because nobody seemed to play
it, after all I was told it's a german game, so it's understandable.

Now the most awaited table will follow, those RPG played most.
You'll see how many people (of all 52) played the game, the name of the game
and then how many percent of all those who played the game played it on the
special computer, so Ultima III was played by 76.9% of 52 and of those 76.9%
37.5% played it on C64. Okay? Enjoy the list, I think it's good!

Let me continue with a short table about the computers on which RPGs are
played most.

1) C64 165 1: Bard's Tale I 2: Ultima III 3: Ultima IV
2) Amiga 124 1: Dungeon Master 2: Bard's Tale I 3: Bard's Tale III
							Phantasie III
3) Others 108 1: Ultima III 2: Ultima II
				       Ultima IV, Bard's Tale I
4) IBM 106 1: Ultima VI 2: Curse of the A.B. 3: Ultima V
							    Pool of Radiance
5) Atari ST 15 1: Dungeon Master 2: Phantasie I
				       Phantasie II

You see for example "Others" (that's mostly Apple), 108 times people played
a RPG on it. then the three games mostly played on Others are listed.

The next will be the list about the marks for all RPGs. Marks are given from
1 to 6, while 1 means the best! (Be careful, many of you reversed the marks).
So this list begins with the best RPG - remember that's the outcome of all
of your opinions together, not mine, so don't flame me, if you think a game's
mark is too good or anything like that. Here it is:

 1) Chaos strikes back 1
 2) Dungeon Master 1.25
 3) Ultima VI 1.58
 4) Ultima V 1.63
 5) Bard's Tale III 1.67
 6) Secret of the Silver Blades	2

27) Ultima I 3.4
28) Ultima II 3.42
29) Moebius 3.53
30) Alternate Reality I 4

The next table that will follow is the one about the difficulties. Everyone
who solved a game had to state his opinion about the difficulty, easy, medium
or hard. The table will show the games in order beginning with the hardest.
3 means hard, 2 is medium and 1 easy.

 1) Wasteland 2.67
 2) Ultima V 2.58
 3) Moebius 2.5
 4) Bard's Tale II 2.4
 5) Ultima IV 2.38

20) Questron I 1.55
21) Ultima II 1.5
    Legacy of the Ancients	1.5
23) Phantasie I 1.46
24) Questron II 1.42
25) Champions of Krynn 1.4
26) Phantasie III 1.3
27) Ultima I 1.25
28) Legend of Blacksilver	1.0

Not every easy game is bad, though (if you try to find a good game to buy)! Just
compare the different tables and find out.

The next table is very interesting, I think. It's about which RPGs are being
bought. You'll see, that many games are originals and not just copies, as
some people may have thought. If you see a good game at the end of the list
(like Chaos strikes back for example), you may think RPGs are still much too
expensive! Otherwise you'll see that many good games are bought often, perhaps
they are worth their money? But it will be a good idea, though, when software-
companies will reduce their prices. Most RPGs are worth their money, but look
at the table yourself which are bought most.

 1) Legend of Blacksilver	100.00%
 2) Legacy of the Ancients 88.89%
 3) Bard's Tale III 80.00%
    Dragon Wars 80.00%
    Demon's Winter 80.00%
 6) Ultima V 79.17%
 7) Ultima VI 78.57%
 8) Secret of the Silver Blades 77.78%
 9) Bard's Tale II 71.43%
Curse of the Azure Bonds 71.43%
11) Wasteland 60.00%
12) Champions of Krynn 56.25%
13) Phantasie I 56.00%
14) Pool of Radiance 55.00%
15) Ultima III 52.50%
    Ultima IV 52.50%
    Bard's Tale I 52.50%
16) Phantasie III 52.38%
17) Dungeon Master 50.00%
    Phantasie II 50.00%

    Alternate Reality I 50.00%
23) Questron I 43.75%
24) Ultima II 42.86%
25) Moebius 42.11%
26) Ultima I 38.10%
27) Questron II 33.33%

    Alternate Reality II 33.33%
30) Chaos strikes back 0.00%

28) Alternate Reality I 6.25%
29) Windwalker 0.00%
30) Chaos strikes back 0.00%

And last - but not least an overview on which computers RPGs are solved.

1) C64 98 1: Ultima III 2: Bard's Tale I 3: Ultima IV
2) IBM 64 1: Ultima IV, Pool of R., Curse of the AB, Secret of the SB.
3) Amiga 58 1: Dungeon Master 2: Bard's Tale I 3: Phantasie III
4) Others 52 1: Ultima III 2: Ultima II 3: Ultima IV
5) Atari ST 8 1: Phantasie I, Phantasie II
