[comp.sys.amiga.games] Strike Aces

kchiu@hydra.unm.edu (08/27/90)

I just bought this game called Strike Aces, and it looks awful a lot
like Fighter/Bomber. I think it is. Can anybody confirm that? Anyways, it was
an Ok game, not too bad.

Has anbody in net land tried "Strike Aces" by Accolade? Any good?

I'm concerned about the screen refresh and the realism.

I have, and have played with the game, and I have to say that i enjoy it
very much. It is definately not on the same level as Falcon for complexity or
graphic realism...heck...I am not even sure how 'realistic' the game is, but it
does provide an enjoyable challenge when I don't want to grapple with Falcon.
The graphics are not the greatest, being somewhat blocky, and the update is not
as fast as some games I have seen (you want to see a FAST updat, take a look at
F-29), but I do like the idea of the bombing missions and all of that. In some
ways it relinds me of an old C64 game ACE in that it includes in-flight
refueling, a tricky maneuver for the occasional pilot as myself. The built in
editor also adds to the game by allowing you to edit the old or create the new
missions as you desire. Currently I have Strike Aces, Falcon, F-18, F-16,
F-29, Wings, BattleHawks, and Their Finest Hour (not to mention a couple of
unusual flight sims such as DragonStrike and Deep Space), and I have yet to
regret adding Strike Aces to an already large collection of sims. I would
suggest that you try to look at and try the game if possible as it does not
take full advantage of the Amiga's graphics capability. The play is the thing
though...

An interesting development...Strike Aces, which was released after Fighter
Bomber, is the same programme, with a different opening screen...

I borrowed it from a friend for a week and played it. I'm afraid to
say that I was disappointed and quite frustrated. Some parts of
the game are extremely nice, like the zoom in an around the target
mode that you can use to examine the target area before going on the
mission. The screen refresh rate seemed fine to me, and you can
lower the complexity of the landscape if it doesn't seem fast enough
for you. I also really liked the waypoint computer that identifies
targets, distances, and directions. The replay mechanism was also
quite nice.

The things that really, really bugged me were these:

1. Air to air combat was virtually impossible to win. The only times
I ever won a dog fight was when the enemy appeared almost directly
in front of me and I was able to get an immediate missile lock and
launch. Once the enemy got behind me, I never was able to get
back behind him for a shot. It looked like he was defying
physics (cheating). Also, even though your radar is good for 25
miles or so, the enemy planes always popped up quite close. The
planes are supposed to be fighter/bombers, but their fighter role
was useless. I couldn't even drop my ordanance to increase the
maneuverability of my plane. The function just didn't work.

2. The book says things like "even using unguided dumb bombs in the
modern bomber is far more accurate because of the sophistated
bomb sights which even tell the pilot when to release the bombs".
No such bombsights exist for the dumb bombs in the game. You get
a single line on your HUD that ends in the middle of the screen.
There's no information on how to use it. I also could not get the
laser guided bombs to hit anything.

These two things bugged me enough that I decided to not purchase the
game for myself. If they had spent a little more time ironing out
these things, it would really be a great game. That's my opinion.

I'll second the thumbs-down opinion of Strike Aces.

Unfortunately, I bought the damned thing (after an impressive in-store
demo.) I went home, played it for a week, and it now sits, unused, on my
games shelf.

The worst part about the game is air-to-air combat. As I mentioned in a
previous post, I can hold my own in ACM on most simulators. I, too, got
toasted all the time in STRIKE ACES.

I originally thought that I was losing because my SI (situational awareness)
wasn't that high. Wrong answer. I am almost sure now that the computer cheats
and moves the planes with codes completely wrong for the aircraft in question.

With regard to update speed: Not bad, but certainly not good enough to make
up for the rest of the game. Other problems: The runways are MILES long,
the planes CANNOT taxi on the ground (haven't these guys heard of nosewheel
steering?) and the planes fly essentially all alike.

  BIG THUMBS-DOWN. Don't bother.
