Would like to hear about any especially nice snorkeling spots or other things to do on the big island of Hawaii or on Oahu. Thanks.

Just returned from there. (Yes, I was there during Iwa.) The best snokeling on Oahu is probably Hanauma Bay out past Diamond Head. There are other good places around the island too, but this is the most popular. Kauai has good spots, too, but I'd hold off on that island for a few months.

I've just discovered that a friend's parents are traveling to Hawaii next month (mid-November), and I've noticed recently that there's been a large number of articles on that very location. However, I didn't know I needed the info, so I didn't collect it as it came by. Therefore, instead of asking for reruns of all those articles, if the person who asked the original question (and who is presumably collecting the info for a more leisurely perusal) could please forward all the stuff s/he's gotten up 'til now, I'd truly appreciate it. I promise to faith- fully gather the info on Hawaii from now on, and I'll try not to ask for info that's just gone by again. I will be going to Hawaii for Thanksgiving week with a friend and my 2 children ages 14 and 11. We will be staying on the island of Oahu. Any information regarding good inexpensive restaurants, the best luau, good snorkeling areas, good shopping, and places to avoid would be appreciated. Nancy Pritts Reply: ihnp4!ihlpl!pritts

Eating - Two great places Oriental (casual, blue jeans place) Restaurant (Best local food on Oahu) go to the Peach Garden in Wahiwa, (between theMcDonalds and Burger King on a back street), great and inexpensive food. For great food and local fanfare go to Kemoo Farms across the street from the main gate at Schofield Barracks in Wahiwa. Go when Charles Davis is playing in the lounge, he is a local Hawaiian (Father was a English doctor and Motherwas a local Hawaiian) and always has a great show and sing along with local Hawaiians dancing. On the north shore, in Haliewa, stop at Mitimusi's (I think that is the right spelling) Shave Ice shop, a little market on the left side of the road going down to the beach from Wahiwa. Great shave ice and t-shirts. Snorkelling - Try the north shore, especially the Steps and Sharks Cove area, (No sharks, just a nice flat, protect cove with several ponds). The north shore has the best surfing beaches - Sunset, Pipeline, and etc, and during the winter months also has the big waves (20 to 30 Feet) from the winter storms in the North Pacific. Listen to the local radio stations for the beach and surf reports. Shopping - Best place for local shopping in the Flea Market at the Drive-In near the Pearl City Mall. I think it is every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Everything in downtown Oahu is touristee and priced high. Go to the shopping malls for better prices. Places not to Go: Stay out of the Chinatwon area at night (local working girls and porno shops). Do not go on the leeward coast (local slum area for Hawaii and the locals do not like tourists). Have a great time and enjoy the sunshine. Terry Dougherty fadoc@brl-bmd.ARPA

Terry Dougherty notes: ... > Shopping - Best place for local shopping in the Flea Market at the Drive-In > near the Pearl City Mall. I think it is every Wednesday, Saturday and > Sunday. Well, it's actually the "swap meet" at the Pearl City Drive-In Theatre next to the Pearl Ridge Shopping Center, and it's on Saturdays and Sundays only. Just down the street from where I live, incidentally. Otherwise ... > Everything in downtown Oahu is touristee and priced high. Go to > the shopping malls for better prices. Especially true if by "downtown" you meant Waikiki. Stay away from stores primarily visited by tourists and you'll definitely save money (and end up with fewer "authentic Hawaiian souvenirs" that you don't notice until you get home actually have a tag which says "made in Taiwan"). > Places not to Go: Stay out of the Chinatwon area at night (local working > girls and porno shops). Do not go on the leeward coast (local slum area > for Hawaii and the locals do not like tourists). Sad, but true. Frankly, if you're planning a trip to the Hawaiian Islands, I'd recommend spending most of your time on the "neighbor" islands (Kauai, Maui, Hawaii) rather than Oahu. My husband and I plan a bicycle vacation in Kauai this summer. Has anyone out there done it or heard any stories about it?? I heard about one couple stumbling on a marijauna field and never being seen again (if they were never seen again how did anyone know?). Anyway, if anyone has any advice or suggestions please let me know.
