I will be spending a few days by myself in San Francisco at the end of this
month, and I would appreciate any tips from current or former locals as
to where to eat, drink and be merry. I am specifically interested in
restaurants and clubs, but I'd like to hear about any place you think is
really worth visiting. (For that matter, I'd appreciate hearing about places
to be avoided!) I will be staying at the Commodore Hotel (825 Sutter St.),
so if you happen to know how far a given place is from there, include that
info.
Last year when I went to Kansas City, I posted a similar request to the
net and the results were very good. Got lots of information that there would
be almost no other way to know. I'm hoping for as good this time.
Thanks in advance,

I am going to be in the San Francisco area during the second
week of Sept. and I would like some suggestions on what to
see and where to eat plus any other helpful hints for having
a good time. I should mention that I will be in a class during
the day. Thanks.

Well, it looks like I will be spending a few days in San Francisco at
the end of July, and since I know very little about the city, I am
hoping that I can get some information this way.
Since I am a student, one of my major concerns is money. And this is
compounded by the fact that I am Canadian, and our dollar hasn't been
doing too hot these days. So... what I'd like to know is;
i) accommodation. Are there any cheap places to stay. I know
that a lot of cities have youth hostels. Does anyone know if
San Francisco does, and if so, what is it like.
ii) food. I will probably buy my food in grocery stores most
of the time, but I will undoubtedly not want to do that all
the time, so are there any good, cheap places around. Also,
what sort of local specialities should I try/avoid.
iii) sights. What can I see that you can get to without a car,
and doesn't cost a fortune. I was brought up on the east coast
of Canada, so would be particularly interested in coastline
type scenery and that sort of thing.
iv) last but not least, nightlife. Like I said, I am a male
student (24). Where should I go/avoid? I am not into disco
or heavy metal (do they still exist?), or particularly
interested in punk, but would enjoy checking out some of the
up-and-coming local music, as well as any other student-
frequented, inexpensive places.
Any other information that you might have would be appreciated. I will
be also be spending four days in Stanford at a conference, so if anyone
has any restaurant suggestions for that area, they will be gratefully
received. Money is not as much of a constraint for this, as it will
come out of a research grant, but things should be kept moderately
priced.
