I had much the same problem until I read the doc file over for the third time.
What you need to do is look at the planet. When you are close enough you will
see a red circle appear around the outside. Aim the ship at a point BETWEEN
the planet and the red line and keep it pointed there. After a while it will
say 'achieved orbit'. DO NOT shut down the impulse engines, they will shut
down automatically.
