I don't know about VIA, but Amtrak reservations most definitely can be made by any knowledgeable travel agent with an up-to-date computer system, IN THE COMPUTER. It is not necessary to call for reservations. The problem with many travel agents is that they are not particular computer-literate and do not keep up with the features their system offers. This is, to some extent, understandable since they are busy with other matters. But it does result in their clients not always getting the best service. Rail reservations by computer are about to be improved even more. So check out your prospective travel agent carefully.
