The recent horror stories about Eastern and American are interesting but if you want to know what a REALLY bad airline is all about try AVIANCA. I don't really want to go into the whole story but if you remember the bus from "Romancing the Stone" you get the right idea. The only 747 I have ever flown with cockroaches... I remember hearing a few years ago that there was a consumer survey done in which people were asked to rank their preferences in airlines. The survey showed that "U.S. Air" was a more popular airline than "Allegheny". So, since there was at that time no airline by that name, "Allegheny" became "U.S. Air". No, I am not interested in conducting a survey. Personally I think Qantas is the best airline I have flown. I have also flown Singapore Air, which is often cited as the best, but something about cartoons of little koalas showing how to sit on a long flight I found quite endearing. The best airline I've flown in, and I've done my share of domestic and international traveling, in definetely VARIG Airlines - the Brazilian carrier. The service on board is tops, from tourist all the way up to a superb First Class. The crew is usually multi- lingual and very keen on providing passeger comfort. Drinks are on the house, and meals in Executive and First Classes are from French restaurants. Basic equipment supplied to passengers include a toilette bag, night goggles, and feet conforters. Their aircrafts are allways very clean, and seem to be well maintained. Just great. On the other hand, the worst of them all has got to be BWIA, otherwise known as British West Indies Airlines. Flights are invariably delayed, airplanes with no airconditioning, terrible food, worse service, and a keen ability to loose great amounts of luggage. And yes, no cockroaches onboard, but plenty of silverfish !!. Eastern Airlines rates right down there, too !!. BIG DAVE.
