[net.travel] 220 volts easy, but 128?

gdykes@batcomputer.TN.CORNELL.EDU (Gene Dykes) (03/18/86)

I will be shortly going on vacation to Bonaire. The juice there
is 128 volts! Not a whole lot of difference from 110, but enough
to burn out my battery recharger. I have been told that converters
for 128 to 110 don't exist. Buying regular double AA's is almost
out of the question - I would need about 150 of them. (For an underwater
strobe, for those interested. 8 batteries per dive, lots of dives.)

Any suggestions?

Try buying a recharger when you get there; there must be people living there
who have the same needs you have.

It is rather unlikely that 128V will blow your recharger, since it is probably
designed to provide a lot more current than is actually drawn charging
batteries. If you are concerned you can get a multiple-cell charger and charge
fewer cells at a time, reducing the load on the recharger. Be sure to follow
directions since many of the multi-cell rechargers charge pairs of cells in
series and if you leave out the wrong cells you won't charge anything.
