[comp.sys.amiga.games] AZURE BONDS!

dower@ritcsh.csh.rit.edu (Dower) (04/04/91)

Hey, has anyone who played Curse of The Azure Bonds had a problem
with the Cloud Kill spell? It just doesn't seem to work... It forms a
cloud that does nothing.

thanx in advance...

In AD&D, CloudKill only works against relatively low level creatures. Above
7th level or so, it's pretty useless... Try it against some low level wimps,
and it will probably work.

About your cloudkill problem: I don't see that. The spell seems to kill
low-level stuff without too much problem. I don't know if you're an AD&D
player or not, but if you are: remember that cloudkill spells generally only
work on critters that have LESS than 8 hit-dice. If the moster that's bearing
down on your sorceror has more than 8 hit-dice, he's gonna simply waltz through
your cloudkill and tear you up! Also, I think that magic-resistant creatures
(like those detestable dark elves) will probably ignore your cloudkill as well.

Hope that helps. To reiterate: I don't think you have a bug in your program.

Now, maybe you-guys can help ME with something: does your version of BONDS
crash when it tries to load-in data for phase spiders when you're in the ruins
near Teshwave? I get this message at the bottom of my screen: Invalid Item,
-1/333 ? Does anyone out there in Net-Land get this too?

Yes, this happened to me. I concluded it was something about that particular
location, and not the type of monster (though I do believe it was Phase
Spiders for me, too.. hmm...). Anyway, after a couple attempts, I decided
not to move onto that particular location...

There are a few bugs in the program. For instance, when you start one
of the 2-classes Elf characters (I forget which, maybe Cleric/Mage), it
divides the starting EXP by 3 (instead of 2). I didn't bother to play
this class and find out if the experience got divided by 3 for the rest
of the game, or not.

Also, I found interesting behavior on my A3000. When I run under 2.0
(a recent Kickstart of the 37.74 variety), the mouse doesn't work at all.
It just stays a shield the whole time. I tried it under 1.3, and the
mouse works correctly, but the program freezes up sporadically, and quite
frequently, for no reason at all.

I decided it was better to play under 2.0, and forgo the mouse support...

I also noticed that when phase-spiders are encountered with thri-kreen,
the program doesn't have any problems. It is only when PS's are encountered
"without any help from their friends" that the program crashes. I haven't
encountered these critters anywhere else yet, so I can't give independent
confirmation of the above. However, I'm definitely sure that its the
phase spiders that fail (3 independent trials... followed by reboot :-) ).

I sort-of decided that Teshwave wasn't too important, and moved-on.
I'm pretty sure I found all of the important encounters there, although
  I can't be *absolutely* sure...

On the whole, I'm VERY happy with this program, but this bug is
annoying. I was looking forward to the challenge of dealing with
large numbers of these critters (and getting the xp award, of course!).

  That's interesting.

Hm. As an AD&D player, I avoid demi-humans because of the level-caps.
  So, I never tried these options. I *do* have a half-elf fighter/cleric
in my party, who started with 12,500 xp in each class, so half-elves
seem to work fine. (I generated her for kicks 'n giggles...)

Hm... you got more money than me... s'ok...

That's not so bad. I've found that the cursor keys work well for
selecting things, and the keyboard is (IMHO) an easier tool to
control the program with. I don't use the mouse very much, myself.

I have a couple multi-classed characters -- it was on the Cleric/Mage that
was screwy, as far as I could tell.

I like playing with the keyboard, too. The problem is, the only way to
edit the icon colors is with the mouse. I was mystified as to how I was
supposed to do this, until I booted it under 1.3 and realized that the
mouse wasn't working at all under 2.0. My solution was to use 1.3 to edit
the icon colors, but play the game under 2.0. But it does make we wonder
if they *tried* the game on a 3000... Apparently not.
