AFS programs provide crosscultural experiences. That means you do more in a foreign country than just try to make other people speak your language. You live with a host family and immerse yourself in their culture. April 7 is the deadline for applications for programs that include trips to the Amazon, Ireland, Tuscany, Quebec, China, Latin America, Thailand and an introduction to Mexican archaeology. It includes recreational programs for handicapped children, restoration of castles and historic monuments, nature conservation, archaeological digs, construction of hiking trails and working with senior citizens. Volunteers are responsible for their own transportation costs to the projects and for a $100 program fee. They are provided with room and board and transportation to the work site, and some recreational and cultural activities.
