[comp.sys.amiga.games] Need help with FA/18 Interceptor

paulb@cbnewsk.att.com (paul.l.bidwell) (04/22/91)

I'm just getting into playing FA/18 Interceptor, and I'm in the qualification
stage, where you have to land on the carrier.

I'm getting quite frustrated doing this. I actually landed twice, but the
game never gave me credit for doing so. The plane just sat there on the
deck. Granted, it was not a pretty landing.

Does it matter which direction you land from? What is the key to passing the
qualification?

Also during this qualification, I've been attacked (which the manual warns
about). However, the manual is very vague about how to use the weapons.

What do the target and range keys do? The target one puts up a box on the HUD -
do I have to line the enemy plane up in that box to shoot it down?

Did you turn your engines COMPLETELY off (zero thrust)?

You can land pretty much any way, from any compass direction - even
upside down. Yes, I realize that landing in the width of the deck isn't
easy. I do it from altitude, with no thrust - severe flare out with the
correct position, attitude, speed & timing. Don't know what the max.
wing loading is supposed to be, but I suspect I would be getting close
(Ahhh!). The fear upon realization that you are approaching this
loading value is not quite the same as when you do it in a real
aircraft...

>What do the target and range keys do?

Target selects which aircraft you want to target, range changes the
range setting of your radar. (Did you read the manual? :^)

With missles, you just select your weapon, choose your target, wait for
the missle lock signal, and fire.

ARGGGHH.

Why do so MANY people spell 'missile' as 'missle'. I mean, it's preposterous.
No, this is not a spelling flame, it's genuine curiousity thinly disguised as
a spelling flame!

The neato PD game 'Gravitywars' calles them 'Missles' as well.

Is this some kind of joke?

[Or is there really a conspiracy?]

It's been a long time sine I did this, but I think that you have to catch
the arrestor hook on the arrestor cable on the deck. Hope that helps.

I have not flown FA/18 Interceptor in a long time (I'm a Falcon driver
now) ;however, I do seem to remember having the same problem. As I
recall you must land on the Aircraft carrier heading the right
direction. I can't remember which direction this is, but obviously
it is one of the two possible angles. I have gotten a lot of enjoyment
out of FA/18 Interceptor but I was never able to get past the submersable sub
mission. If you make it past there let me know the secret. The advice you
recieved about keeping your arrestor hook
down was also good advice. As I begin to recall now, I used to spend a lot of
time driving around the carrier deck just getting the hook to catch so the
mission would end. I hope this helps.
Please forgive my rambling and my typos :) "Viper 21 snap 350 degrees, bandits
at 25 miles committing south."

Land on the carrier at heading 350 degrees. You takeoff at 0 degrees.

You do not need to catch the arresting wires to end a mission. You just
need to shutdown your turbine (0% thrust.)

As far as the sub mission goes, take out all the Migs and the cruise missile,
should it appear, and land back on the carrier. That's it. Apparently
you can sink the sub if you manage to make six AMRAAMs hit the conning tower,
but I have never managed it.
