[comp.sys.amiga.games] Elvira: is it any good?

pdc@lunch.wpd.sgi.com (Paul Close) (04/30/91)

I recently saw the game "Elvira: misstress of the dark" (or night, or
something). It looked pretty neat, and the salesman said he likes it (but
that doesn't necessarily prove anything! :-). It was a little pricey for
impulse buying, so I'm looking for a mini-review.

What's it like? How much fun is it? Are there other games that it is
similar to?

There, that wasn't too difficult, was it?

Thanks,

Oh, no! You walked into the slavering fangs of a lurking grue.

Elvira is actually pretty neat. It's a huge game (5 disks) with good
graphics, sound, and gameplay. A good combination of adventure-game with
hack-and-slash. Much better usability and ergonomics than the Ultima
series, Phantasie, and Wizardry, for example.

Unfortunately, it's too easy. There are a couple of annoying puzzles that
you have to struggle against, but it's mostly pretty straightforward.

Elvira has very nice graphics and sound. It is a "horror adventure" -- if
you are put off by having your character get decapitated (for instance),
you will not like this game. Elvira's story line is a little thin (compared
to, say, Bane of the Cosmic Forge). It is mostly hack & slash with some
simple puzzle solving. It will load on a hard disk drive. Combat is
semi-real-time (you must anticipate which way to block blows).

If great graphics & sound are important to you, Elvira has them. The
game mechanics are reasonable, the CRPG aspects have some interesting
innovations (you must collect herbs, etc... to mix up spells), and the
plot line is fairly reasonable. It isn't one of my favorite RPGs, but
it's not awful either.
