Subject: Amtrak Summer Sleeper SURCHARGE

Amtrak has just issued a notice to all field personnel about
a SLEEPER SUMMER SURCHARGE. This will be a surcharge of 25% of the
accomodation charge for private rooms from 15 June'82 through 29 August'82
on the following trains:
The Crescent (except from the North East Corridor to
cities between ALX and CVS, inclusive).
The Lakeshore Limited.
The Broadway and Capitol Limiteds.
The Cardinal (only from the North East Corridor to cities
GAY and CHI).
The Eagle (only from Chicago through JOL to POS through LAX).
The Southwest Limited.
The San Francisco Zephyr.
The Pioneer (locally only).
The Desert Wind (locally only).
The Empire Builder.
The sunset Limited.
The Coast Starlight.
Any reservation made on or after 15 May'82 for travel during the surcharge
period will be subject to the increased rate. If your reservation is
made BEFORE 15 May'82 NO SURCHARGE will be applied, even if you ticket
is not paid until after 15 May'82!
There is a catch (of course), if you have a reservation that was made
before 15 May and you change the first leg of the trip (except for
adding or removing members of the party, or to change to different
accomodations on the same train, or to change to a further destination on
the same train), then the surcharge will apply to the changed portion
of the reservation. If the change is not made to the first leg of the trip
then the pre-surcharge rate will apply.
Thus, if you are planning a trip in an Amtrak sleeping car this summer,
MAKE YOUR RESERVATION *BEFORE* 15 MAY'82.
[Only the accomodation charge (the extra charge to occupy a private room)
will be subject to the surcharge; there will be no surcharge on the railfare
portion of the ticket].
