The Pacific Railroad Society, a Southern California group that organizes rail
excursions, is organizing a trip to Australia. Of course there will be travel
by train upon reaching that country.
There are two basic plans: a 14 day trip and a 22 day trip. The 22 day
trip is an extension of the 14 day trip.
The cities to be visited include: Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Bunbury and
environs, Adelaide, Alice Springs, Cairns. The 22 day tour also includes:
Cairns area, Great Barrier Reef, Gympie. An optional return trip is via Tahiti.
The trains to be used will be: the Brisbane Limited (Brisbane-Sydney), the
Indian-Pacific (Sydney-Perth), the Australind (Bunbury-Perth), the Ghan
(Perth-Alice Springs). The 22 day excursion also includes: the Kuranda (Barron
Gorge), the Sunlander (Cairns-Gympie), a cane train through pinnaple fields
(Sunshine Plantation).
The Society also is offering a 17 day trip to New Zealand which can be
taken separately, or in conjunction with the Australia trip.
