I originally created the Arpanet RAILROAD mailing list based from LLL-UNIX. It was later moved by Chuck Weinstock to MIT-MC and maintained by him there until earlier this year when I resumed the task. About a year ago, I polled the Usenet to see if interest in RAILROAD existed. Since it did, someone at Berkeley (ucbvax) set up an Arpanet/Usenet gateway from the Arpanet RAILROAD@MIT-MC to fa.railroad on Usenet. All articles posted to Railroad@Mit-MC were automatically forwarded to fa.railroad on Usenet. To post news to the group from Usenet, one sent the news via mail to ucbvax!c70:railroad which forwarded it to MIT-MC and then it came back to fa.railroad. This all worked fine for a while, until the Brekeley gateway started becomming eratic. At that time, I created net.railroad and have been manually forwarding articles between the arpanet and usenet groups. The group was originally created to discuss transportation issues (inter and intra city) with emphasis on rail transportation, however since no one has complained about the recent series of model railroad articles, I have no objection to them. So much for the history of this group... Feel free to discuss anything of transportation orientation or model railroading. If people start complaining, then perhaps net.railroad.model could be set up. While not a model railroader, I do find those articles interesting. However, please do NOT stop submitting transportation articles! Michael S. Maiten Silicon Gulch, California ...!ucbvax!menlo70!sytek!msm (msm@Mit-MC ARPA)
