[comp.sys.amiga.games] New PC emulator on amiga: Chuck Yeager's AFT

colas@celeste.inria.fr (Colas Nahaboo) (06/04/91)

Yesterday I tried a neat new PC emulator on the amiga, it is called:

Chuck Yeager's AFT

I was impressed! You get the actual illusion of being in front of a PC: hoorible
colors making you about to throw up (bright orange/bright blue), super
smoothness on a 68000 (you can take a coffee cup between each frame), impressive
maniability which could match the latest massey-fergusson models, and great
scenery, sometimes, you even get a white pyramid on your orange background, very
neat!!! You even have Chuck Yeager's face coming up many times so that you can
spit on him !!!

I highly recommend this game, I appreciate much more falcon mission disks or F19
now that I know such !@#$%^ is possible :-) (And I will buy birds of prey as
soon as it is out!).

PS: Why am I so violent against it? because, unlike most products, computer
games prices have no relationship to their quality. In fact, the best game ever
made are often the cheapest (Populous, Dungeon Master). F19 was cheaper here
than this "thing". If Chuck Yeager's AFT were, say 1/5 the price of F19, there I
would have said nothing, it would be normal, you pay for what you get.

Minor point... CY's AFT is not a game. If is a flight simulation.
It's major goal was to duplicate the general flight charactoristics
of a number of different aircraft.

But all your other points are well taken.

The best PC-based flight sims are found on the IBM/compat. machines
(much to my dismay). If they were brought to the amiga (properly...
using Amiga's strengths) that would be great. IBM 'emulation' in
that case, would be a good thing.

Sad but true, and not just flight sims. Look at Jetfighter II, or
Test Drive III. Neither due out for Amiga soon, if at all, but these
are some of the best 3-D type programs there are.

Of course, another problem is with the CPU chip. Many, many IBM games
are out that require at least an 80286 for good enough speed and graphics.
Unfortunately, hardly any Amiga games even ACKNOWLEDGE the existence of
a 68020/30. On the one hand this is good -- the programmers have to be
really good and get speedy graphics on a 68000 instead of just being sloppy
and saying "aw, make the user get a faster processor..." But on the other
hand, truly sophisticated and fast 3-D programs are not as common -- the
software makers may be assuming that if it's just too big for a 68000 to
handle, then NO Amiga can handle it. I wouldn't be that pleased if, say,
Falcon 3.0 Amiga required a 68020 or better, but I'd be happier than if
no Falcon 3.0 Amiga existed at all. Which it doesn't.

So... am I totally off base here, or what?

No! We had a real test: 386 16Mhz VGA+ soundblaster and normal amiga 2000 side
by side... Amiga falcon was MUCH better than the IBM one, same with F19!!! (in
term of refresh rate, and apparent definition due to better palette choice). I
too thought "PCs have all the sims" before this test.

You get more flight sim on the PC, and sooner than on the amiga, but they are
NOT better! Be wary of "the grass is greener in the neighbour's field"
syndrome... Of course we don't have Flight sim4, but the amiga scene is not
grim!

I was especially disapointed by Red Baron. The PC Owners were so enthusiatic
about it, but it is well two times slower than wings!!!

No! F19, Bob, wings, falcon, do this! + all the dynamic/360 PC-ports (A10, blue
max, etc...). I agree a lot of arcarde games do not, but I think for flight
sims, only F18 does not work well with accelerated amiga (but then it just
accelerates, like wing commander on the PC)

PS: a program which is better on the PC than amiga is Indy 500, but even then,
with the dropping price of 68030 cards, you will be able to add a 68030 for the
price of a soundblaster card :-)
